A Pet Door for Your Pet Print E-mail
Saturday, 02 December 2006
As a human being, you have the freedom to move to and fro as soon as you are tall enough to reach the door handle; you have the ability to step outside and pick up the newspaper, and then rush back in, closing the door quickly to keep out the cold.  But does your beloved pet have the same freedom?  Studies have shown that pets, especially dogs, whose lives are spent in a confined area are less healthy and less happy.  You have the opportunity to offer this freedom to your dog or cat, and with a quick, easy choice you can pick a pet door that is perfect for them.

Pet doors come in many shapes and sizes, some sized for a small kitten and some for a large dog; this is the first factor you should consider, ensuring that your pet can come and go with full freedom and comfort.  Other factors include color and type - make sure that it fits well with the scheme of your house - as well as insulation properties and locking mechanism.

Most doors have some sort of mechanism which will temporarily lock them, usually a magnetic strip, and this allows the cat or dog to push through and walk through the door, which can then swing shut after them.  You may want to consider a lock that can be closed permanently, for example, overnight, until you decide to unlock it...this way, you govern your pet’s movement and protect it from the outside world when you feel it’s necessary.

By understanding these factors, you can make the choice as to how much money you’re willing to shell out, based on what type of door you feel would most behoove your beloved pet.  By giving them the freedom they deserve, you will give yourself the power to make their lives all that much happier.

A Myriad of Pet Door Choices: Pet doors come in hundreds of shapes and sizes, created to accommodate each cat and dog, be it a slender feline or a huge canine.  The most important factor when choosing a pet door is its size and shape, ensuring that it will be of correct size for your beloved pet to fit perfectly through it.  Many brands of pet door allow for specific dimensions, which can easily be compared and chosen, with very little price difference between sizes.

A pet door generally costs somewhere between twenty and fifty dollars for a simple design; the least expensive doors swing outward on a single hinge, and allow cats and dogs to enter and exit easily - unfortunately, they also do the same for cold air and other animals in the neighborhood.  Even insects, especially ants, tend to find their way through inexpensive, simple swinging doors.  The slightly more expensive models generally have some sort of insulation built into the design, helping to ward off cold air and keeping heat bills in the house just where they are.

For a whopping five hundred dollars, an entire sliding patio door can be purchased with a nearly-invisible pet door near its bottom; this is a wonderful commodity for those who live in a house with a patio, but seems an incredibly large fee to pay for such a simple commodity.

The easiest place to pick up a simple pet door is generally at your local pet store, where you can usually find doors of all dimensions and types; on top of the door’s cost, a moderate fee of about fifty dollars will be required if you wish to have a professional-grade installation (usually performed by an employee of the pet store).  Ordering a pet door online is usually pointless, unless you plan to install it yourself by cutting a hole out of your current door and using simple tools to place the door.

A pet door is a valuable commodity to those with insistent pets, or those who want to ensure their animals’ safety and happiness.  But it is important to first understand exactly what door one should purchase.
