If you’re still in high school and you know you want to become a dental assistant, keep your grades up and take the appropriate courses. Biology and Anatomy and Physiology are two of the courses that you should take in preparation for your career as a dental assistant. Scholarships are competitive and in order to get one, you’ll need to have a well-rounded high school resume. This includes community or extra-curricular activities, as well.
You can most likely get a grant, but you want to keep your options open, especially if you plan to advance in your career. Starting your career as a dental assistant may just be the beginning for you, so it’s important that you do your best in everything. If you’re already out of high school or even decades beyond the last classroom you’ve seen, you can still become a dental assistant. Some dental practices will provide on the job training and not require any formal education at all. Of course, it all depends on how far you plan to advance in your career as a dental assistant. Obviously, the more education you have, the better your chances are of succeeding. Whether you’re just out of high school or you haven’t seen a classroom in decades, you can successfully complete a program in a year or less to become a Certified Dental Assistant. This isn’t a job for the faint of heart though. You’ll see pain and suffering and things that make the squeamish turn away. However, no one is a better judge than you about whether or not this is a suitable career for you. Whether you decide to engage in formal education or not, the best asset you can bring to your career as a dental assistant is a heart full of compassion. Your patients will thank you. |
