Integrating Shopping Carts and Inventory Systems Print E-mail
Saturday, 04 August 2007

If you find that you are spending a lot of time trying to keep up with your inventory system and your shopping cart manually, you may want to consider purchasing or leasing software that integrates the two. You can often find software that will integrate your inventory system, bookkeeping system, and shopping cart system so that all information is only entered one time.

There are a few ways that you can integrate your shopping cart and inventory systems. The best way to handle this integration is when you first start your online business. Most inventory, or point of sale, software comes equipped with the ability to either build an online store using their shopping cart software, or connect to an online store. These software packages are generally very reasonably priced, especially when you consider the value of the time you are currently spending to track inventory manually.

If you are already using separate inventory and shopping cart systems, you will want to contact the publisher of your inventory software. Ask the inventory software company if there is an add on that you can purchase to integrate your shopping carts and inventory systems. If this solution is not possible, as the vendor if they are affiliated with any shopping cart software companies that might be able to assist you.

If these solutions do not work, you will have two further options. First, you can purchase new point of sale inventory software that does integrate with your shopping cart system. This can be somewhat time consuming as you shift all of your information from one system to the other. However, it will save you time in the end when you no longer have to track your inventory and shopping cart systems manually.

The other option you have is to hire a programmer or web developer to create an integration system for you that will integrate your inventory and shopping carts systems. This can become quite expensive, but may be worth the money if it will take months to switch to a new inventory system. Changing shopping cart systems may be easier than switching inventory systems, but it is best not to change the format of your website on your loyal customers.

If you are a smaller online retail store, you likely do not need to worry about the expense of trying to integrate your shopping carts and inventory systems. However, if you are just starting out and expect your business to grow, you would do well to heed this advice and start out with an integrated system.
